Lewis receives contract extension
April 7, 2008
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU Athletic Director Danny Morrison has announced that volleyball coach Prentice Lewis has agreed to a contract extension through May 2012. Already the program's all-time winningest coach in just six seasons, Lewis guided the Frogs to their second-most successful season in 2008 with a 22-12 mark. Under her direction, TCU has posted three seasons of 20 or more victories. "We are very pleased with the extension," TCU athletics director Danny Morrison said. "Prentice has done a great job in developing the program and there is a lot of momentum around TCU volleyball. We made excellent strides in 2007 and are excited about the direction of the program under Prentice's leadership." "TCU is committed to all of our sports and I appreciate the fact that our administration gives all of its coach's tremendous support," remarked Lewis. "In this case, it acknowledges the hard work we have put into the volleyball program over the past six years." The 22 wins posted in 2007 were the second-most in school history. The Frogs finished league play 9-7 and were the fourth seed in the postseason tournament. To close out the regular season, the Frogs picked up the biggest win in school history as they defeated No. 15 Colorado State, 3-2. LeMeita Smith garnered All-MWC honors, the first Frog to do so in the Mountain West. "It is no secret that we love it here in Fort Worth and at TCU. The length of the contract will allow us to continue to enjoy this area and is a statement to recruits that we plan on being at TCU a long time," said Lewis Taking over a program that had not put together a winning season since becoming a varsity sport in 1996, Lewis wasted no time when she was hired in 2002. She guided the Frogs to a 12-18 record her first year, the third highest win total in school history. Under her tutelage, the Horned Frogs had their first all-conference player when Domi Szabo was named to the third-team All-Conference USA squad. The 2003 season marked the first winning campaign and the first 20-win season in school history when they finished with a 20-16 mark. Even more impressive was the nine-game winning streak the Frogs put together early in the season. Szabo repeated as a third-team all-conference performer, while Anna Vaughn earned a spot on the all-freshman squad. Another record-setting campaign followed in 2004 as the Frogs finished the season with an impressive 23-9 overall record and a 10-3 mark in the ultra-competitive Conference USA. Szabo continued to snatch up honors as she became the first Frog to earn first-team all-conference accolades. Talaya Whitfield and Vaughn helped the Frogs make history as both earned a spot on the all-conference squads. Whitfield was a second-team performer, while Vaughn was named to the third-team. The 2005 season saw the Frogs make the transition to the Mountain West. Despite a 16-18 finish, Lewis was able to move into the top spot on the career victories list when the Frogs defeated Seton Hall on Sept. 3. TCU returned to its winning ways with a 17-15 record in 2006 to give the Frogs three winning seasons under Lewis. The Frogs won a then-school record 12 home matches en route to a fifth-place tie in the conference. Lewis is 110-88 overall at TCU.
