Nov. 27, 2009
LONG BEACH, Calif - The TCU volleyball team rallied from a one-game deficit to record a 3-1 (15-25, 29-27, 25-15, 29-27) win over Long Beach State. Christy Hudson paced the team with 16 kills, while Kristen Hester tallied a career-high 12 kills in the Frogs 25th win of the season.
After a hitting just .184 to start the match, the Frogs woke up and never hit lower than .391 in the final three sets as they racked up 64 kills and hit .342 in the match. Katelyn Blackwood tallied 18 of the Frogs 71 digs and Lauren Otto picked up 16. Irene Hester and Kourtney Edwards each tallied 13 kills. Edwards led the Frog block with seven as TCU totaled nine in the match.
The Frogs took early control of the set as Edwards pounded down four kills en route to a 6-3 TCU lead, forcing a 49er timeout. Long Beach State picked up three quick points to tie the set at six, but Irene Hester was able to put the Frogs back on top with a kill to the middle of the court, forcing another Long Beach timeout.
The timeout was all the 49ers needed as they didn't allow the Frogs to string together consecutive points the remainder of the set. A 19-8 run closed out the 25-15 first set victory for the 49ers. Edwards led the Frog attack in the set with six of their 10 kills.
TCU fought hard to even the set at a game apiece as it battled to a 29-27 set two victory. Long Beach State grabbed the early lead and held on as the set worked its way to an 18-16 49ers lead, forcing a TCU timeout.
Out of the break, the Frogs went on a 3-0 run that turned the deficit into a 19-18 lead on an Edwards solo denial in the middle. After a 3-0 run by Long Beach, the Frogs took a timeout out and followed with a 5-2 run that gave them their first set point. Irene Hester pounded down two kills in the run as did Kristen Hester. TCU would fight off a 49er set point and pick up three more of its own before an Edwards/Munce block on the outside locked up the victory.
Playing for the match lead, the Frogs came out on fire. A 5-0 run propelled TCU to a 6-2 lead and the Frogs never looked back. Edwards and Hudson teamed on a pair blocks along with some outstanding defense from Kristen Hester helped the Frog lead grow.
Long Beach State used both its timeouts early, but couldn't stem the tide as the Frogs continued to fire on all cylinders. Hudson gave the Frogs a 10-point advantage with her second kill of the set. Along with Kristen Hester, Hudson would keep pushing as the lead continued to grow. The duo tallied five more kills to make it a 22-13 contest. Kristen Hester gave the Frogs set point with her fourth kill of the set and Irene Hester finished off the 25-15 win with a cross-court blast.
Making a bid to tie the match at two, the 49ers took a 16-13 lead, only to see the Frogs answer with a 4-0 run that would put them on top 17-16. Edwards, Hudson, Megan Munce and Irene Hester led the charge for the Frogs. The teams would trade two-point runs before the Frogs eventually found themselves in control with a 24-23 lead on a 49er miscue.
The 49ers fought off four straight match points, but couldn't fight off the fifth as Otto gave the Frogs a 28-27 lead and Edwards finished off the 29-27 set four victory.
TCU improves to 25-6 on the season with the victory. The Frogs will return to the court Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (CST) as they play UC Irvine.
