Frogs stumble against Bears
Oct. 24, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a 3-0 (23-30, 27-30, 24-30) decision to the Baylor Bears Wednesday night at the University Rec Center. The Frogs were led by LeMeita Smith and Kourtney Edwards, who each notched 11 kills in the match, while Calli Corley tallied a match-high 15 digs.
The first set was evenly matched early as the squads battled to an 8-8 tie, but from there the Bears took control of the game. A Katie Sanders kill spurred a 9-4 rally that saw the Frog deficit jump to 18-12.
A solo block on the outside by Smith on a Haley Thomas attack pulled the Frogs within four, 21-17, but TCU wouldn't get any closer as the Bears claimed a 30-23 victory in game one.
Again in game two, the Frogs found themselves facing a big deficit as the Bears stormed out to an 11-6 lead. A kill from Christy Hudson spurred a 5-0 run by the Frogs that tied the game at 11. Lauren Otto dropped in an ace and an Edwards/Nirelle Hampton denial gave the Frogs some momentum. An Edwards' kill on an overpass tied the game.
The momentum was squashed as the Bears quickly regained a three-point advantage and nursed it to a 29-24 lead. Devon Kirk tried to get the Frogs back in the match as she served the Frogs within two, dropping in her lone ace of the match, but a kill from Taylor Barnes sealed the 30-27 game two win for Baylor.
Game three was all Baylor as they again ran out to a big lead behind the serving of Sanders. TCU couldn't gain any ground, despite tallying 17 kills in the set. The Frogs battled late in the set with a Hampton/Edwards denial and back-to-back kills from Smith, but it was too little too late as the Bears won the set 30-24.
The Frogs (18-9) return to league play on Friday night when they host the New Mexico Lobos. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
