Frogs win streak snapped in 3-0 loss to Texas State
Sept. 25, 2007 SAN MARCOS, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs saw their five-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 (22-30, 19-30, 28-30) loss to Texas State Tuesday night. Offensively, the Frogs were led by LeMeita Smith's eight kills. Calli Corley registered 12 digs to lead the Frogs. The Frogs took an early lead in game one only to see the Bobcats rally to tie the game at nine. Texas State took the lead on a kill from AJ Watlington. The Bobcats maintained at least a one point advantage but the Frogs were able to battle back to tie the game at 17 all on an Emily Jones attack error. Texas State regrouped and went on a 5-1 run to open up its largest lead of the set, 22-18. The Frogs closed within two on a Nirelle Hampton ace, but another 3-0 run by Texas State put the Frogs in a five-point hole. Jones finished off the game one Bobcat victory at 30-22. LeMeita Smith led the Frog attack with four kills, while Lauren Otto was the dig leader with five in the set. The Frogs tallied three solo blocks, but couldn't overcome the 17 kills by the Bobcat offense. Another early lead in game two for the Frogs slipped away. Kills from Hampton and Otto along with an ace from Smith gave the Frogs a 4-1 advantage. Just like in game one, the Bobcats battled back to tie the game at 11 and then proceeded to go on a 10-1 run to open up a 21-12 lead. The Frogs put together a 4-1 run on a solo block and two kills from Kourtney Edwards, but it wasn't enough as Texas State closed on the set on a 4-1 run to claim the 30-19 game two victory. Hampton and Edwards dropped in three kills in the set, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats were on fire, hitting .415 in the set with 22 kills. Game three was a back-and-forth affair with neither team building much of a lead. The Frogs grabbed the early 8-5 lead on a kill from Devon Kirk only to see the Bobcats rally to tie the game at eight. A denial on the outside from Smith and Kirk gave the Frogs a 17-16 lead and Edwards made it 18-17 with a loud kill down the middle. TCU extended its lead on a service error by Texas State and the Frogs were able to work their way to a 22-20 advantage on a kill from Otto. Texas State would tie the game, but Kirk broke the tie, tipping the ball over the block. An Otto ace extended the lead to two, 24-22. The Bobcats weathered the storm and went on a 5-1 run to close out the game, stealing a 30-28 victory. The Frogs hit .444 with just one attack error in the set, but the Bobcats racked up 23 kills and four aces in the set. TCU falls to 15-3 on the season. It will return to conference play on Friday night when the Frogs travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for a meeting with New Mexico. The match is slated to air tape delayed on The Mtn. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
