TCU Sweeps Up George Mason
Sept. 21, 2013
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The TCU volleyball team claimed a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-19) victory over George Mason Saturday morning for its second sweep in the Spartan Spiketacular at UNC Greensboro inside Fleming Gym.
The Horned Frogs (10-3, 0-0 Big 12) held the Patriots (3-10, 0-0 A-10) to a negative hitting percentage in the match, which was a first this season.
TCU came out firing to start the match on a 4-0 run with kills from Yvonne Igodan and Stephanie Holland. George Mason would come back within two, but that was as close as they would get as the Frogs jumped out to a 19-9 lead highlighted by a balanced offensive attack by TCU. Errors by the Patriots kept the set rolling as the Frogs claimed a 25-12 set one win.
The Frogs once again jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but George Mason would climb back into the match and tie the set at 13-13 after three kills from Meredith Bush. The teams would trade points until a kill from Mattie Burleson at 17-17 propelled TCU to a 3-0 run and forced the Patriots to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Frogs kept the pressure up by going on a 5-2 run to end the set 25-19 in their favor.
Two kills from Burleson and two blocks from Burleson and Holland got TCU off to a fast start in the third set with a 7-1 lead. George Mason closed the gap within two, but the Frogs could not be stopped and took the third set 25-19 and the match.
Ashley Smith led the team with nine kills, while also chipping in six digs. Burleson finished with eight kills and no errors for a .500 hitting percentage, while Holland also recorded eight kills. Holland and Burleson each finished the match with five blocks apiece and helped TCU to a team total 10 blocks.
The Frogs will wrap up action at the Spartan Spiketacular by playing host UNC Greensboro tonight at 6 p.m., in Fleming Gym.
