Sept. 14, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Volleyball rebounded to post a 3-0 (30-19, 30-22, 30-17) win over Sam Houston State in the Nike Tournament, improving to 6-0 at home this season. The Frogs were led offensively by Kourtney Edwards' 12 kills and defensively by Loren Barry's 15 digs.
A crisp effort by the team as a whole in game one helped the Frogs cruise to the easy victory. Edwards led the charge with five kills as the team collectively hit .306 in the set.
TCU broke open a tight set with Katelyn Blackwood behind the service line. Kills from Edwards and Lauren Otto helped the Frogs build an 11-4 lead. That lead would continue to grow as the Bearkat errors continued to mount, giving the Frogs a 20-10 advantage.
Game two proved to be a tighter affair as the Bearkats showed some life on the offensive side. But an even better offensive showing by the Frogs helped them nab the 30-22 win and a 2-0 match lead. Four kills by Christy Hudson and Edwards helped the Frogs to a .333 hitting percentage in game two.
The Frogs fell down 0-2 but with Kirk behind the service line, TCU rattled off eight straight points to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Frogs withstood a rally by Sam Houston State that saw it creep back to within three, 16-13, but a Hudson blast off the block stunted the rally.
TCU sailed through the remainder of the set, winning the game on back-to-back hitting errors by the Bearkats.
Sam Houston State hit -.050 in game three, helping the Frogs overcome their worst offensive game of the match in which they hit just .211. Irene Hester led the offensive charge for TCU with four kills in the set and pitched in with four digs.
With the Frogs in control of the game at 23-17, TCU closed out the match on a 7-0 run with Hester behind the line. Kills from LeMeita Smith, Kirk and Hudson brought the Frogs within two match points. Back-to-back blasts from Smith brought the match to a close.
Outstanding defense by the Frogs produced 57 digs and 8 blocks in the match. Calli Corley tallied 14 digs and two aces, while Edwards, Hudson and Smith each recorded three blocks in the match.
The Frogs (11-2) will play a doubleheader Saturday to close out tournament play for the 2007 regular season. Their day begins with a 1 p.m. match against Alcorn State followed by the 7 p.m. finale against Gonzaga.
