Frogs sweep away Texas State
Sept. 13, 2006
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs got back to their winning ways with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-17, 30-25) sweep of Texas State Wednesday night at the University Rec Center. LeMeita Smith led the Frog attack as she racked up 12 kills in the three-game match. Calli Corley paced the Frogs defensively with 17 digs. The Frogs dropped in 13 aces on the night, led by Lauren Otto's career-high, five.
Six kills by Smith in game one got the Frogs off on the right foot. The game was close as they battled to a 10-10 tie before TCU took over the game. An Anna Vaughn kill pushed the Frogs lead to 15-12 and Smith kept it a three-point cushion with her third kill of the game. Emily Allen served the Frogs to a 25-21 lead and Kourtney Edwards finished off the game, 30-24, with a loud kill down the middle.
The Frogs tallied 19 kills in the game and hit for a .261 percentage. Nine digs by Corley thwarted numerous attacks by the Bobcats as they hit just .211 in the game.
Game two was all TCU as they stormed out to a 7-2 lead. Katelyn Blackwood started the Frog rally behind kills from Otto and Edwards mixed in with her lone ace of the game. Otto kept the Frogs rolling as she put together back-to-back aces to extend the Frog lead to double-digits, 21-11. A loud kill by Vaughn on an overpass gave TCU the 30-17 win and a 2-0 match lead. Nine attack errors by the Bobcats and another strong hitting performance by the Frogs led to the 30-17 win by the Frogs.
A fight to the finish ensued in game three as the Bobcats rallied to take a lead late in the game, trying to extend the match. The Frogs were able to stop any thoughts at a Texas State comeback as they tallied four aces in the final nine points.
TCU looked to be in control with a 15-10 lead, but Texas State put together a 13-6 run to take a 23-21 lead. Vaughn halted the rally with a ringing kill and Otto tied the game with her first ace of the game. A Smith smash gave the Frogs a 25-24 lead and they cruised to the 30-25 victory from there. Nirelle Hampton's second ace of the match sealed the Frogs' victory.
TCU improves to 11-2 on the season with the victory. The Frogs will open conference play on Saturday afternoon at the University Rec Center when they host Wyoming. Match time is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
