Frogs Win Again in Five, Top New Orleans for Ninth Straight
Sept. 12, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - Nirelle Hampton reached another career milestone as she became the all-time assist leader at TCU in the fifth set. Needing five at the start of the match, she finished with 47 as the TCU Horned Frogs went the distance for the third straight match. The Frogs dropped New Orleans, 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, 15-10) to match a school-record nine-game winning streak. Kourtney Edwards was the hitting star with her second career double-double, finishing with 17 kills and 10 blocks.
The Horned Frogs stormed out to an early lead in the first set as Lauren Otto was on fire. She teamed with Devon Kirk to open the match and followed with two kills and another block, this time with Kourtney Edwards as the Frogs took a 5-1 lead.
Out of a timeout, the Privateers found their groove as they battled back to tie the game at five. TCU stayed with New Orleans as the score climbed to 17-13 in favor of the Frogs on a kill from Otto. Along the way, history was again made as Nirelle Hampton became the all-time school leader in assist when she set up Edwards for a kill in the middle.
New Orleans took over the set from that point as it went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead at 23-18, forcing a TCU timeout. The strategy worked as the Frogs got the match evened up with Katelyn Blackwood behind the service line. Irene Hester slammed down three kills in the run, but a kill from Dobrilla Kovacevic gave the Privateers match point and they finished off the 25-23 victory.
A tighter game in set two saw the teams battle out to a 9-8 TCU lead. Kirk and Christy Hudson each tallied kills to push the Frog lead to three, 11-8 and Edwards made it 13-9, forcing a New Orleans timeout.
TCU continued to build on its lead as a solo denial by Otto in the middle stretched the Horned Frog lead to six, 16-10. But the Privateers found a spark and fought back to pull within two, 16-14, however back-to-back hitting errors doubled the Frogs lead at 18-14.
After two more hitting errors, TCU was firmly in control. Sarah Joeckel gave TCU a 23-16 lead and an ace from Hampton gave TCU set point. Kirk finished the set with a kill as the Frogs got the match evened at one with the 25-17 win.
New Orleans burst out of the gates after the intermission, storming out to a 17-8 lead as Kovacevic and Lindsey Lloyd were on fire. TCU had a rally left in them as they battled back to get the set tied at 20. Edwards and Otto were factors in the 12-3 run as they combined for four kills and four blocks.
The set worked its way to a 24-all kill after a dump by Hampton, but back-to-back kills from Lloyd locked up the 26-24 set two win for New Orleans.
Again, New Orleans raced out to a 5-1 lead only to see the Frogs fight back. Edwards and Hampton spurred the run that got the Frogs within one and a blast from Edwards eventually knotted the game at 12.
An attack error by Kaley Hubbard gave TCU a 16-15 advantage and the Frogs sailed from there. An ace by Hester forced a New Orleans timeout and Otto made it three with a kill off the block out of the break. A kill off the slide by Kirk locked up the fourth set victory as TCU forced game five with a 25-20 kill.
As in the previous two sets, the Privateers again stormed out to a 6-3 lead. Edwards took over the set from there as she silenced New Orleans with a loud kill down the middle. A service error by New Orleans cut their lead to 9-8 and Edwards teamed with Otto to knot the game at nine.
An attack error by Kovacevic put the Frogs in front where they would say. Edwards scored three straight points for the Frogs and Otto finished off the 15-10 win.
Otto finished with her third double-double of the season, tallying 15 kills and 12 digs. Kirk set a career-high with 12 kills to go along with seven blocks. Blackwood set the tone defensively with 21 digs.
TCU (9-0) will wrap up play in the Red Raider Round Up Saturday morning against another Big 12 opponent, Oklahoma. Match time is slated for 11 a.m.
