TCU Takes Title With 3-2 Win Over Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The TCU volleyball team completed a successful run in the Rutgers Invitational with an exciting 3-2 (25-15, 29-31, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13) victory over Rutgers Saturday afternoon. Irene Hester was tabbed the tournament MVP as she led the Frogs with 18 kills and 18 digs in the match. Meghan Horio was also named to the all-tournament squad.
Horio was outstanding in guiding the Frogs to victory, finishing the match with 44 assists, a career-high eight kills, seven digs and three aces. Christy Hudson notched 11 kills to go along with six digs and two blocks. Kristen Hester finished the match with nine kills, five digs and two blocks. Hannah Fort racked up seven kills and led the team with five blocks. Kay Lin Connolly pitched in defensively with 11 digs.
The Frogs led from start to finish in the first set, claiming the easy 25-15 victory. Irene Hester set the tone with a first-serve ace and the Frogs never looked back. A block from Fort and Irene Hester gave the Frogs a 10-5 lead and a kill from Irene Hester made it 14-8, forcing a Rutgers timeout.
TCU kept rolling out of the break as Hudson, Jordan Raines and Horio racked up kills to stretch the lead to eight, 18-10. Rutgers pulled back within five, 19-14, but Raines killed any thoughts of a comeback by Rutgers with a kill, then served the Frogs to a 22-15 lead. Hudson gave the Frogs set point and Kristen Hester delivered an ace for the win.
A much tighter affair took place in the second set as Rutgers battled to get the match tied at a game apiece. With the score knotted at nine, the Scarlet Knights went on an 8-1 run to open up a 17-10 lead. TCU kept the deficit manageable and eventually got the set even at 22 on a service ace from Fort.
The teams continued to battle as the Frogs fought off two set points for Rutgers before getting one of their own on a kill from Irene Hester. Rutgers in turn fought off three straight set points by the Frogs and turned it into a 30-29 lead. Kylie Orr ended the dramatics with a kill for a 31-29 Rutgers win and a 1-1 tie in the match.
It was all Horned Frogs in the third set as they took control of the match with a 25-16 victory. TCU opened up the set with a 9-4 run and never looked back. Horio served up back-to-back aces to give the Frogs a commanding 12-5 lead, prompting a Scarlet Knight time out.
The Frogs kept rolling out of the break, pushing the lead to 11, 21-10, on a kill by Kristen Hester. An Irene Hester kill gave the Frogs set point and a Rutgers service error sealed the win and a 2-1 match lead for TCU.
Rutgers turned the tide in the fourth set, leading wire-to-wire to get the match tied at two. The Scarlet Knights won 25-16, forcing a decisive fifth set.
TCU took control of fifth set early and never looked back. Hudson slammed the ball to the court for a 3-2 lead and Horio followed with an ace to give the Frogs a two-point advantage. Rutgers kept the set within two points but an ace from Kristen Hester stretched the lead to three, 13-10.
Rutgers again pulled back within one, 13-12, but a kill by Fort gave the Frogs match point. Irene Hester put the nail in the coffin with a kill to lock up the 15-13 victory for TCU.
With the win, the Frogs improve to 6-4 on the season. TCU returns home to host the Nike Invitational Sept. 17-18. The Frogs will welcome Ohio, UAB and UTSA to the University Rec Center. Friday will see the Frogs square off against UTSA at 1 p.m. and UAB at 7 p.m. The UAB match will be nationally televised on The Mtn.
