Frogs win four-game battle over Georgia Southern
Sept. 8, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs battled their way to a 3-1 (32-34, 30-15, 31-29, 30-14) victory over Georgia Southern for their seventh straight win. Multiple Frogs set career highs in the match led by LeMeita Smith's 21 kills. Kourtney Edwards chipped in with a career-high 18 kills and Loren Barry tallied a career-best 24 digs.
The Frogs fell behind early in game one and had to battle hard to get back in the set. Georgia Southern jumped out to a 17-9 lead, but with Christy Hudson behind the line, the Frogs rolled off six straight points. The offense came alive as LeMeita Smith and Kourtney Edwards picked up some loud kills. The Frogs eventually tied the game at 18 on a Katelyn Blackwood ace.
From there a back-and-forth battle ensued. Neither team could build much of a lead as they battled through 13 times. TCU fell down 28-24, but Lauren Otto served the Frogs back into the set as they knotted the game up at 28. Three Eagle errors in that stretch aided the Frog rally and gave the Frogs set point. An Otto service error tied the game at 29.
Both teams faced set point on different occasions, but the Eagles made the most of one opportunity as Gorana Bacic drilled a kill off the block for the 34-32 game one victory.
TCU came out in game two and looked a lot crisper as they stormed out to a 9-2 lead. Kills from Otto, Smith and Edwards spurred the rally along with strong serving by Devon Kirk and Blackwood.
Another 7-3, this time behind the serving of Loren Barry and Nirelle Hampton, propelled the Frogs to a 17-5 lead. From there the Frogs were able to steadily work their way to the game two victory, eventually winning 30-15 on an Eagle attack error.
Game three was much like the first one, only this time the Frogs came out on top with a 31-29 victory. The Eagles claimed the early advantage at 15-11, but TCU had a rally in them as they worked the score to an 18-all tie
Again, the Eagles regained the advantage going on a run of their own to take a 29-27 lead. Hampton stepped back to ser and pushed the Frogs on a 4-0 run to end the set. A kill from Irene Hester and an attack error by the Eagles gave the Frogs match point. Hester finished off the set with a loud kill off the block.
The Frogs used the momentum they gained from the game three win and cruised to the easy 30-14 win. Hudson served the Frogs to an 8-1 lead. The Eagles got back within three at 12-9, but a Kirk/Smith denial stunted the Eagles rally.
Otto stepped behind the line and rolled off three points followed by a seven-point run on Kirks serve. Those two combined to push the Frog lead to 22-11 and TCU closed out the game on an 8-3 run, highlighted by kills from Edwards, Otto and Smith.
The Frogs (8-1) will take on Denver at 7:30 p.m.
