Frogs sweep Lamar, tally sixth straight win
Sept. 7, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs needed just three games (30-26, 30-26, 30-26) to dispatch the Lamar Cardinals to extend their win streak to six games. Another solid offensive performance saw three Frogs reach double figures in kills with Lauren Otto leading the way at 16. Defensively, Calli Corley recorded a match-high 20 digs.
Otto racked up eight of her digs in game one alone as the Frogs hit a solid .385 as a team. The game played itself to a 10-10 tie before the Frogs went on a mini-run to open up a three-point lead. Lamar rallied again to tie the game at 20, but a Cardinal service error gave the Frogs a 21-20 lead.
With Loren Barry behind the service line, the Frogs reeled off four straight points to regain the advantage. A Kourtney Edwards kill and a Blackwood ace pushed the lead to 28-25. A Lamar hitting error gave the Frogs set point and Devon Kirk finished it off with a loud kill down the middle.
In game two, the Frogs recovered from a late deficit to take a 2-0 match lead. After gaining the early lead, the Cardinals went on a 16-11 run to erase a three point deficit and open up a 23-20 lead.
TCU tied the game on a LeMeita Smith kill and an attack error by Lauren Holdorff, but a Kaci Brewer smash killed the Frog rally. Again, Smith had an answer with back-to-back kills to give the Frogs the 25-24 lead. A Nirelle Hampton/Edwards denial pushed the Frog lead back to two. Barry gave the Frogs set point with a kill and Edwards finished it off with a throw down in the middle.
After falling behind 5-1 to start game one, the Frogs went on a 13-2 run to open up an 18-9 lead. Irene Hester reeled off six points on her serve, helped along by kills from Edwards, Smith and a triple block in the middle by Smith, Edwards and Christy Hudson.
Another big run behind the serve of Katelyn Blackwood helped the Frogs roll off five more points. Edwards pitched in with three kills in that stretch and Otto dropped in one of her own.
Lamar began to mount its rally as it pulled within two, on a 13-6 run. The Frogs, however, were able to withstand it as they closed out the match on a 6-4 run. A Smith blast on the outside sealed the deal as the Frogs completed the sweep.
Hampton tallied her second double-double of the day with 47 assists and 11 digs. Edwards racked up 15 kills and Smith added 12.
The Frogs (8-1) return to the court tomorrow for a noon match-up with Georgia Southern followed by a match against Denver at 7:30 p.m.
