Harkins fares well in wildcard event
July 31, 2007 CARSON, Calif. - Women's tennis player Macall Harkins had a successful showing at a wildcard event held at the USTA training center in Carson, Calif., going 2-1 overall the past three days. The winner of the tournament will receive a wildcard into the qualifying draw of the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles, Calif.
The tournament consists of some of the top current and former collegiate stars in the nation, including four players who ended the 2007 season ranked in the top 20 of the Fila/ITA collegiate poll. The round robin tournament has two brackets, with the winner of each bracket facing each other to determine who receives the wildcard.
Harkins began action on Sunday, downing former Alabama standout Robin Stephenson 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Harkins then faced Megan Falcon of LSU in the second round, falling 6-1, 6-4 before scoring an impressive 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jessica Nguyen of Stanford, who finished the season ranked No. 20 and reached as high as No. 5 during 2007.
Falcon, who finished this season ranked No. 2 in the nation, will face Natalie Frazier of Georgia in the championship match that will decide who receives the wildcard.
