Nichols and Tweedie-Yates advance to quarterfinals of Fort Worth Pro Tennis Classic
June 16, 2005 Fort Worth, Texas - Story Tweedie-Yates and Kewa Nichols both won their second round matches on Thursday to advance into the quarterfinals at the $10,000 Baylor Medical Center at Southwest Fort Worth Pro Tennis Classic. Tweedie-Yates started the day with a three-hour match against No. 5 seed Tetiana Luzhanska of the Ukraine. The former Frog, who is ranked No. 654 in the world, won by the count of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 over No. 528 ranked Luzhanska. The Redmond, Wash., native will now face No. 3 Ansley Cargill on Friday morning beginning at 9 a.m. Cargill, who has been ranked as high as 90th in her career, easily defeated Puerto Rican and former Texas A&M player, Jessica Roland, 6-0, 6-3. Nichols, a sophomore-to-be for TCU, was also victorious as she topped No. 748 Biffy Kaufman in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the deciding set, Nichols was up 3-0 before Kaufman battled back to make the score 5-4. Serving for the match, Nichols fell behind 15-40 before settling in to close out the match. The Austin, Texas, native will now face the No. 1 seed, Kristen Schlukebir, at 9 a.m. on Friday. Schlukebir topped American Nina Munch-Soegaard in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to earlier today. In doubles action, wild card qualifiers Andrea Morgado and Gloriann Lopez gave the No. 2 seed Arpi Kojian and Pascale Leroy a tight match in first round action as they fell 7-5, 7-5. In the opening set, the TCU pair was up 4-1 before their opponents staged a comeback to narrowly win the set.
