FORT WORTH, Texas - The 16th-ranked TCU women's tennis team will embark on unfamiliar territory on Thursday at 8 p.m. (CST) when it takes on top-ranked and host Stanford in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. For the Frogs, it is their first-ever Sweet 16 and the contest is only their fourth-ever versus the two-time defending national champion Cardinal. All the action from Palo Alto, Calif., can be watched via live video at http://gostanford.cstv.com/livestats/tennis/StanfordTennis.html
Stanford has won 82 matches in a row with its last loss coming in the 2003 National Championship contest.
TCU earned its way into the NCAA Tournament by way of automatic bid after winning the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championship. In their inaugural season as a member of the league, the Horned Frogs posted an 8-0 regular-season record and downed three-straight opponents in the conference tournament to win the crown.
Senior Helena Besovic, junior Ana Cetnik, sophomore Nicole Leimbach and freshman Anna Sydorska garnered All-MWC singles honors for their efforts during league play. Besovic, Cetnik, Sydorska and sophomore Andrea Morgado received doubles teams accolades.
The Frogs finished the regular season with a record of 21-6 and were awarded with a host seed in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. It was the first time that any TCU women's tennis program had hosted.
In round one, TCU blasted Conference USA champion Rice 4-0 on Friday night to make its fourth ever second-round showing. Round two saw the Horned Frogs down 18th-ranked Texas 4-0 to move on to Stanford.
Stanford comes into Thursday's match with a record of 26-0 and is the 2006 Pac-10 champions. The Cardinal, similar to the Horned Frogs, blanked Quinnipiac and Arizona in their opening round matches to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Cardinal leads the all-time series 3-0 with the last matchup coming on Jan. 26, 2004, in Palo Alto.
