Women's tennis heads to San Diego for MWC Championships
April 26, 2006 FORT WORTH, Texas - Ranked 16th in the current ITA poll and garnering the No. 1 overall seed, the TCU women's tennis team will begin its run at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championship on Thursday at 4 p.m. (CDT) versus Wyoming. Set to take place in San Diego, Calif., the Frogs are in search of their first tournament championship under head coach Dave Borelli. As a first year member of the Mountain West Conference, the Frogs quickly established dominance by sweeping its initial three league opponents. TCU only got stronger as the season went on and posted a 6-1 win over defending conference champion and 26th-ranked BYU on April 7. The Frogs took over first place in the standings the following day after BYU defeated 40th-ranked New Mexico. With a lead in the race to the regular-season crown, the Frogs did not look back. TCU distanced itself from New Mexico with a 5-2 triumph on April 13 and clinched at least a share of the title with a 5-2 victory versus 46th-ranked UNLV on April 14. The squad claimed the regular-season crown on April 15 with a 7-0 victory over No. 32 San Diego State. Senior Helena Besovic, ranked 30th in the ITA singles poll, comes into the tournament on a 16-match win streak and is the reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Week.
