April 26, 2006
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The annual TCU All-Sports Banquet was held Monday night with Jackson Langat (men's track and field) and Helena Besovic (women's tennis) receiving the Pop Boone Award, while Chad Andrus (football) and Gloriann Lopez (women's tennis) were selected for the Dutch Meyer Award.
The Pop Boone Athlete of the Year Award, named after the famed sports writer, is based upon exceptional athletics performance. Langat, a senior from Kericho, Kenya, is the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Champion in the 800 meters with a TCU record time of 1:47.02. He received his second All-America honor as part of the men's 4x400 meter relay team.
Besovic is a senior from Sarejevo, Bosnia. She holds a No. 27 ranking and was 8-0 in both singles and doubles during the 2006 Mountain West Conference season. Besovic is the only player nationally to appear twice in the top 18 in the doubles rankings (No. 15 with Anna Sydorska, No. 18 with Ana Cetnik). She also became the first player in TCU history to hold a singles ranking as well as two doubles rankings. Besovic is TCU's first ITA Regional Singles and Doubles Champion.
The Dutch Meyer Scholar Athlete of the Year Award is named for the former TCU athletics director. The award is given to a graduating senior with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 who has been an integral participant on their team and has demonstrated service to the campus and community.
Lopez serves on the TCU Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is a two-time member of the ITA All-Academic Team. Andrus is the starting tight end for the Frogs' football team.
