Nichols earns MWC Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors
April 19, 2007 FORT WORTH, Texas - Kewa Nichols was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday. Nichols went 6-0 overall last weekend to help lead the TCU women's tennis team to three consecutive shutout victories and a share of the MWC regular season crown.
Nichols cruised through singles play over the weekend, recording straight sets victories over Anette Pohjalainen of Colorado State, Kelly Morgan of Air Force and Andrea House of Wyoming. The three victories extended Nichols' winning streak to 12 matches, and the TCU junior finished the conference regular season with an undefeated 8-0 mark.
Nichols also teamed up with Ana Cetnik at the No. 2 position over the weekend to notch a 3-0 record. The duo recorded dominating victories by scores of 8-2, 8-4 and 8-3 against their MWC opponents.
The Austin, Texas, native currently holds a dual singles mark of 19-6 this season. During Nichols' 12-match singles winning streak, which lasted from March 14 through April 18, the junior only needed a third set once.
The accolade marks the third for the Frogs this season, as Ana Cetnik was honored on Feb. 7 and Nina Munch-Soegaard was recognized on March 1.
The women will return to action on April 26 at 11 a.m. CT against Wyoming in the quarterfinals of the MWC Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo.
