FORT WORTH -- TCU's women's tennis team closes its six-match homestand Thursday when Kentucky visits the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center for a 2 p.m., matchup.
The Horned Frogs (2-6) are coming off a tough 4-3 loss to No. 6 Miami last Saturday. The Hurricanes were ranked third at the time. Kentucky is just the third unranked opponent on TCU's schedule thus far in the spring season.
Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa, TCU's No. 1 doubles duo, have amassed a 5-3 record this spring and debuted at No. 52 in the doubles portion of the Campbell's/ITA College Tennis Rankings. Overall this season, the TCU tandem is 3-3 against teams ranked in the top 80.
Freshman Olivia Smith is 5-3 in singles this spring, including wins in two of her last three matches. Smith has played at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions for the Frogs. Additionally in singles, Gaby Mastromarino is 4-2 this spring, while Idunn Hertzberg and Shalini Sahoo have racked up 4-4 marks.
Thursday's match is the end of a TCU homestand that has seen the Frogs play six-straight in the friendly confines of the Friedman Tennis Center. TCU plays three in a row on the road before returning home April 1 to open the MWC season.
The Wildcats enter the match coming off a pair of 6-1 road losses to No. 21 Tennessee and No. 11 Georgia. Freshman Khristina Blajkevitch picked up her fourth singles victory of the season against Tennessee, and No. 112-ranked Megan Broderick recorded her co-team-leading sixth singles victory of the season. UK squares off with Baylor on Wednesday before visiting Fort Worth.
On the doubles courts, Blajkevitch and Broderick have combined to amass a 3-5 record while playing at the No. 1 spot this spring.
TCU and Kentucky are renewing their series for the first time almost 23 years later to the day. The Frogs and Wildcats last met on March 15, 1988 with UK claiming an 8-1 win in Fort Worth. In the all-time series, when the two schools squared off from 1986-1988, UK holds a 3-0 advantage.
