Nov. 4, 2004
Ann Arbor, Mich. - Senior Story Tweedie-Yates became the second TCU women's tennis player to win a match at the ITA National Indoor Championships today when she defeated No. 18 Karin Coetzee of Wake Forest at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
Tweedie-Yates, who is No. 59 in the country in the ITA fall rankings, cruised through her opening round match over Coetzee with a straight set 6-1, 6-1 victory. The senior joins Rene Simpson (1988) as the only Horned Frog player to win a match in the event.
"Story played with such a sense of purpose today," said Assistant Coach Jefferson Hammond," She is really playing well and with a lot of confidence."
Junior Helena Besovic dropped a tough decision to the No. 1 seed Audra Cohen of Northwestern in her opening match. In the first set, Besovic battled Cohen, the winner of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, but the Wildcat freshman prevailed 7-6 (5). Cohen then carried her momentum from the opening set and closed out the match with a 6-1 victory.
"Helena was down in the first set 5-2 and battled back to play a hard fought set losing five in the breaker," said Hammond. "She proved to herself that she can play with the very best in the country as Cohen is now 21-0 this fall."
Tweedie-Yates will play the No. 4 ranked Julie Coin of Clemson in the second round on Friday. Coin, who is also the No. 4 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 23 Shadisha Robinson of Georgia by a count of 6-3, 6-2 to advance. Meanwhile, Besovic will compete in the tournament's back draw on Friday. Her opponent has yet to be determined, as the draw will be announced later tonight after the completion of Thursday's matches.
