WACO, Texas – TCU sophomore Stefanie Tan won two matches Sunday at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on the courts of Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center.
Tan advanced to Monday’s championship semifinals with wins in the round of 16 and in the championship quarterfinals. She defeated Aeriel Ellis of Texas, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the round of 16 before bettering Rice’s Dominique Harmath, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarters.
Ellis is a two-time ITA singles All-American and plays No. 1 for the Longhorns. She is ranked No. 20 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, while Tan is No. 56. Ellis is the highest-ranked player Tan has beaten in her young TCU career.
In other action, TCU’s Simona Parajova dropped a tough three-set match to Harmath in the round of 16, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 decision. Defending regional champions Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith bowed out with an 8-6 defeat to Texas Tech’s Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde.
Tan continues her play in the championship semifinals Monday morning against Baylor’s Ema Burgic. The semifinals and championship match of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships are Monday.
