Frogs Taking Over Southwest Region
Oct. 18, 2004
College Station, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team continued its strong play today in the ITA Southwest Regional. The Frogs advanced junior Helena Besovic to the singles main draw final and the two remaining TCU doubles teams will face off in the semifinals.
Besovic continued her strong play on Monday when she won a pair of matches to advance to the tournament final. In her opening match, Besovic defeated Daniela Covella of Baylor 6-2, 6-1. Later in the day, she joined senior Story Tweedie-Yates in the ITA National Indoor Championships when she beat Helga Vieira of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-3.
Besovic, who now has compiled a 14-2 record this fall, will take on Kendra Strohm of Texas in tomorrow's final. The match will begin at 9:30 a.m.
In doubles play, Tweedie-Yates and freshman Kewa Nichols advanced to the semifinals with a win over Marina Chiarelli and Tiffany Tucker of LSU 8-3. In the bottom half of the bracket, senior Karla Mancinas teamed with Besovic to defeat Z Puflerova and Breda Kovac of Southeastern Louisiana University 8-3.
With both teams advancing, it sets up a showdown tomorrow between Tweedie-Yates/Nichols and Besovic/Mancinas for the right to advance to the tournament's doubles final. The winner of the doubles will then advance to the National Indoors.
"With Helena in the finals, TCU is now guaranteed two singles players competing at the National Indoors in November," said Assistant Coach Jefferson Hammond. "We also have a very good chance of advancing a doubles team to the Indoors as one of our teams will compete in the finals tomorrow afternoon."
"Overall, our coaching staff couldn't be more pleased with the entire team's effort," said Hammond. "They've really competed and come away with outstanding results thus far."
