FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team pushed through both doubles squads and a pair of singles players through the second day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
TCU’s fourth-seeded doubles pairing of junior Katariina Tuohimaa and sophomore Kayla Duncan advanced to the round of 16 after an 8-3 victory against Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova from North Texas. The No. 9-16 seeded group of senior Megan Alexander and junior Maria Babanova followed suit, displacing Stephen F. Austin’s tandem of Roxana Enica and Alina Shazhko, 8-3.
From the singles’ courts, No. 111 Alexander stormed past Katarina Mlcochova from UTA, 6-4, 6-0, while Duncan also advanced into the round of 32 with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Abby Liu from Texas.
After a good start, Babanova dropped her round of 64 match to Lorena Aviles From Texas Tech, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Junior Idunn Hertzberg, who has been battling illness all week, also took a tough loss Friday, falling to SMU’s Pavi Francis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Baylor’s fourth-seed Taylor Ormond, a singles finalist at the 2008 Regional, defeated Tuohimaa, 6-1, 6-1.
TCU will be back in action Sunday, playing two rounds of main draw singles, alongside the round of 32 for main draw doubles.
