Oct. 6, 2004
Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Senior Story Tweedie-Yates won two matches today at the Riviera Tennis Club to advance into the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. Tweedie-Yates will play tomorrow against Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky, who is ranked No. 9 in the nation.
In the opening match on the day, Tweedie-Yates defeated No. 33 Ana Anastasiu of Southern California 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the third set, she was trailing 2-4 before she rebounded to secure the victory. In the Round of 16, the transfer from Stanford beat New Mexico's Maja Kovacek 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to advance into the main draw.
"I was really impressed with Story today," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "When she was down in her first match, she really played her best tennis of the day. It was nice to see that she played so well during the big points of the match."
Junior Helena Besovic also advanced to the Round of 16 after she defeated No. 36 Mihaela Moldovan of Florida State 6-2, 6-1. However, in the match to move into the main draw, Besovic fell to No. 85 Nancy Kockett of Tulane, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
"Today's match to advance was Helena's seventh match of the tournament and it really took its toll on her," said Borelli. "Overall, it was a major step for our program to see her advance this far because it is really difficult to move through the pre-qualifier and then the qualifier to just get into the main draw. Regardless, this week Helena proved that she could play with and beat some really good players."
