April 28, 2006
SAN DIEGO - The 16th-ranked TCU women's tennis team downed 56th-ranked New Mexico 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center to advance to the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championship match. The Frogs will take on second-seeded BYU at 5 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday for the conference crown.
"Tomorrow (Saturday) we have a very good match to play," stated TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "We just have to go out and play well."
TCU fell into an early deficit after dropping two of three doubles matches to surrender the point for the first time in conference play. Sophomores Nicole Leimbach and Kewa Nichols prevented the sweep by posting an 8-3 victory over Nora Quintal and Maria Sotirchos at No. 3.
"New Mexico played really well in doubles, but we were able to come back ready to play in singles," said Borelli. "I was happy with the way the kids played in singles. We seem to play our best tennis in conference matches."
Senior Gloriann Lopez evened the match tally at 1-1 after knocking off Jennifer Ryba 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. Lopez now sits at 9-0 in conference matches.
2006 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year Anna Sydorska gave the Frogs their first lead of the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Quintal at No. 3. Sydorska is currently ranked 93rd in the ITA singles poll and holds a conference mark of 9-1.
30th-ranked Helena Besovic stretched TCU's lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 over 75th-ranked Iva Gersic. Besovic, the reigning MWC Player of the Week, holds a 9-0 record in singles play.
Nichols posted her second victory of the match and clinched a championship appearance for the Horned Frogs after downing Lucy Scott 7-6(2), 6-0 at No. 5.
Despite having the match called due to the Frogs clinching, 17th-ranked Leimbach played a strong contest versus 31st-ranked Maja Kovacek.
"I think Nicole is starting to play better," explained Borelli. "She played very well today and I am excited about that."
With the win, TCU improved to 20-6 on the season.
