Women's Tennis Falls to Tulane, 4-1, in Championship
April 18, 2004
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 25th-ranked TCU women's tennis team came up short Sunday as top-seeded, and 15th-ranked, Tulane posted a 4-1 victory over the second-seeded Horned Frogs to give the Green Wave its second consecutive Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship title at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Frogs, now 17-7, saw their 15-match winning streak come to an end with the setback. The Green Wave opened with a victory as the No. 3 doubles when Jenny Kuhn and Maria Ivanov defeated sophomore Gloriann Lopez and junior Paige Brown, 8-3. However TCU fired back with its No. 2 team of senior Paty Aburto and junior Karla Mancinas posting an 8-6 decision over Tulane's 21st-ranked duo of Nancy Kockott and Dorottya Magas. Tied for the doubles point, TCU's No. 32-ranked tandem of senior Saber Pierce and freshman Ana Cetnik won the tiebreaker over Tulane's Darya Ivanov and Julie Smekodub, 9-8 (3). Tulane refused to give up on defending its C-USA title in singles action. At No. 6, Kockott swept Lopez, 6-2, 6-1, while Magas downed Mancinas, 6-0, 7-5, at five singles. Kuhn swept Jenn Chay, 6-3, 6-2, at three, while Maria Ivanov clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Aburto at No. 1. Complete results of the match can be found below. The Frogs now await selections for the NCAA Regionals, which begin May 14-16 at campus sites. The 2004 NCAA Championships will be held in Athens, Ga., May 20-29.
