Women's Tennis Drops 4-0 Match to Tulane
April 15, 2003
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The 55th-ranked TCU women's tennis team couldn't pull off the upset win against the 28th-ranked Tulane Green Wave in the Conference USA Championship match on Tuesday afternoon at Goldring Tennis Center. Tulane topped the Horned Frogs, 4-0, in a battle that was much closer than the score indicated. TCU's record goes to 11-10 overall and 4-2 versus Conference USA opponents.
Tulane captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. TCU's 59th-ranked duo of junior Paty Aburto and senior Rosa Perez were up on the ninth-ranked tandem of Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub when their match at No. 1 was called per championship protocol.
Tulane swept the lower three singles positions to clinch the championship title. As in doubles play, TCU battled back to take the advantage in the third sets of the first three spots, but no matches were finished after the Green Wave clinched the win with Ana Saaibi's 7-6, 6-2 victory over freshman Iris Jaklin at No. 5.
"We really played pretty close," said head coach Dave Borelli. "We were up in three matches at the end before the match was called. The kids rose to the occasion today."
