WACO, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team stayed perfect in Big 12 play Wednesday evening with a 4-2 win over Baylor at the Bears' Hurd Tennis Center.
The No. 42-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 13-2 on the year and 3-0 in Big 12 action. The No. 34 Bears slipped to 7-12 and 2-1. TCU won for the first time in the last eight tries against its former Southwest Conference foe.
"Our doubles were great," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "I like to tinker with the doubles lineups during the year to make sure we have the right combinations at the end when it really matters. I had a hunch that the ones we went with today would be the best ones.
"That's a big win over a team that's going to compete for the title. The kids played tough after not playing well the other day, which turned out to be a good wake-up call. It's always good to beat a well-coached team like Baylor. It's good to show we belong in this conference because we certainly do."
TCU won the crucial doubles point in dramatic fashion Wednesday, scoring a clutch win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point. Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram were first to win for the Frogs, though, bettering Alex Clay and Jordaan Sanford, 8-4.
With Baylor having already claimed a win with its No. 29-ranked duo at No. 1 singles, Gabi Barbosa and Monika Sirilova clinched the point and 1-0 lead for TCU with their 9-7 downing of Alex Leatu and Kiah Generette on the third doubles court.
As singles began, Baylor briefly took a 2-1 lead with wins at Nos. 1 and 4 singles. The win at No. 1 came from the Bears' 10th-ranked Ema Burgic. Sirilova ensured the lead was short lived, evening the match at two with her 6-2, 6-2 dismissal of Maria Biryukova at No. 6 singles.
No. 71-ranked Stefanie Tan snatched the lead back for good for TCU, dropping the 120th-ranked Victoria Kisialeva, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The sophomore from Singapore improved to 10-4 this spring and tallied her third win over a ranked opponent.
Simona Parajova clinched TCU's 4-2 win at No. 3 singles when she took care of Sanford, 6-1, 6-3. The Zvolen, Slovakia, native is 11-4 this spring and 3-0 in Big 12 play. The remaining match at No. 5 singles was stopped with Denti leading 6-3, 5-2.
The Frogs return to action April 3 when they travel to SMU for a 2 p.m. matchup. The match will close a six-match road trip.
