TCU Tops Pepperdine, 4-2, In Rain Shortened Match
March 24, 2005
Malibu, Calif. - The No. 20 TCU women's tennis team (13-2) rebounded from its second loss of the season to defeat No. 31 Pepperdine, 4-2, at the Ralph-Straus Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. The teams opened play with singles and the doubles matches were cancelled due to rain showers in the Malibu area.
"I really think this is a great win for our team," said Dave Borelli. "Pepperdine is a very good team that I think will be among the top-25 at the end of the season, so to beat them on their home courts is a quality win. Today, they also had girl (Dulgheru), who is in the top-100 in the ITA rankings, back in their line-up. She is a player that really gives them additional, quality depth."
With the Frogs up 3-2, No. 25 Story Tweedie-Yates clinched the match and ensured that the doubles point didn't have to be played when she topped Caroline Raba in three sets. The senior fell in the first set, 6-1, before storming back to win the match with 6-4, 6-2 scores. With the win, Tweedie-Yates is now 24-4 this season and she is riding an eight game winning streak.
No. 56 Helena Besovic picked up her team-leading 27th win this season when she topped Natalie Braverman, 6-4, 6-2, at the two line. Sophomore Ana Cetnik, the reigning C-USA Player of the Week, defeated Sylvia Kosakowski, 7-5, 7-5, at the four spot. Freshman Andrea Morgado won her fourth straight match beating Merve Asimgil, 6-1, 7-5, at six.
"Ana and Helena came back and played really well today after a tough day on Wednesday," said Borelli. "They both came out fighting and they were able to pick up the wins."
The Waves picked up their two points when Bianca Dulghera topped Kewa Nichols, 7-6(4), 6-1 at three and when Eva Dickes was victorious over Gloriann Lopez, 6-2, 6-2, at the five.
TCU will return to action on March 30 in Norman, Okla., when it faces the Oklahoma Sooners.
