TCU women's tennis cruises past Mississippi, 6-1
Feb. 25, 2007 FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 17 TCU women's tennis team defeated No. 63 Mississippi 6-1 on Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Frogs improved to 4-3 overall, while the Rebels fell to 4-6.
"Today we came out and played a banged up Mississippi team, and kept our focus and had a nice win," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "This will give us some confidence as we get ready for Baylor on Tuesday."
The Rebels came into Fort Worth fighting injuries, and had to forfeit games in doubles No. 3, singles No. 5 and singles No. 6.
The doubles duo of Nina Munch-Soegaard and Kewa Nichols clinched the doubles point for TCU with an 8-6 win over Mississippi's Nika Koukhartchouk and Soledad Podlipnik. With the win, the TCU pair improved to 6-1 on the season. The No. 3 tandem of Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska recorded their fourth consecutive win together, downing Kseniia Tokarieva and Ilona Somers 8-4.
With the Frogs only needing a point coming into singles play, No. 60 Munch-Soegaard made quick work of Tokarieva 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the win for TCU. Junior Kewa Nichols followed with a straight sets win over Podlipnik 6-2, 6-1.
No. 23 Cetnik fell 10-5 in a tiebreaker after the second set against Somers in the No. 1 slot, while No. 88 Sydorska won the second set tiebreaker to take the match 4-6, 6-2, 12-10. Andrea Morgado and Karine Ionesco were credited with wins in singles No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
