TCU Improves To 3-0 With 6-1 Victory Over UT-Arlington

Fort Worth, Texas - The No. 20 TCU women's tennis improved to 3-0 on Thursday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Texas-Arlington on the Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Frogs were victorious in seven of the nine matches on the day with all their singles wins coming in straight sets.
"UTA was a good team and they played really well today," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "We needed some good competitive matches in preparation for future opponents and they were certainly that. Overall, I was pleased with our kids' results."
Senior Paige Brown and freshman Andrea Morgado played a stellar match to pick up the first victory of the day in the No. 3 doubles spot. The pair defeated Gretel Hach and Jessica Shepard 8-1 to improve to keep their fall record perfect.
Senior Story Tweedie-Yates and sophomore Ana Cetnik clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Monika Peciulionyte and Anete Rozkalne at the No. 1 position. The Mavericks avoided the sweep in doubles when Pavla Mesterova and Daniela Novakova upset No. 34 Helena Besovic and Karla Mancinas, 8-6.
In singles, the bottom of the line-up breezed through their opposition to get the ball rolling for the Frogs. Morgado secured an impressive win in the No. 6 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jessica Shepard. Junior Gloriann Lopez followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hach. Lopez has shutout her opponents in five of six sets this spring.
In the No. 4 spot, Kewa Nichols fell behind 1-5 in her opening set against Anete Rozkalne. However, the freshman battled back to claim the first set 7-5 and then closed out the match 6-2. Tweedie-Yates clinched the match for the Frogs at the No. 1 position with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Peciulionyte.
Cetnik picked up the final win of the day for TCU with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Novakova to improve to 3-0 on the season. Besovic dropped a tough match to Mesterova in three sets. After Besovic won the first set 6-4, the UTA freshman battled back to claim the second 7-6 (5). In the tiebreaker, Mestrova held on to upset the No. 25 ranked Horned Frog junior, 10-8.
TCU will play the first of five ranked opponents on Sunday in Fort Worth. The No. 7 Clemson Tigers come to town for an 11 a.m. match with the Frogs.
