Frogs Beat North Texas, 7-0, For Second Straight Shutout
Feb. 9, 2005
Fort Worth, Texas - The No. 20 TCU women's tennis recorded their second straight shutout on Wednesday afternoon as they handled North Texas, 7-0, on the indoor courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Center. TCU (2-0) won six of the 12 sets in singles on the day, 6-0.
"I was really happy with the way our team played today," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "This team plays with a very high intensity and they have great attitudes. It is early, but we're off to a good start to the season."
In doubles, senior Karla Mancinas and junior Helena Besovic started things off by securing the first victory of the day with an 8-3 victory over Holly Lee and Kelli Royer. The pair, which is ranked No. 34 in the ITA rankings, is now 9-3 overall this season.
Sophomore Ana Cetnik and senior Story Tweedie-Yates clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Krysta Lee and Katherine Harris. The final doubles match, at the No. 3 position, was the tightest of the day. Senior Paige Brown and freshman Andrea Morgado improved to 2-0 this spring as they hung on for the 9-7 victory over Ashley Sammis and Megan Schulbach.
In singles, Tweedie-Yates and junior Gloriann Lopez each won their matches, 6-0, 6-0. Lopez has not allowed a single point in her first two matches this spring. Sophomore Ana Cetnik clinched the match for the Frogs with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Harris in the No. 4 singles spot.
The only change in the line-up in singles for TCU was the flip-flop of freshman Kewa Nichols and Morgado in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Nichols defeated Schmulbach, 6-2, 6-3, at five, while Morgado won 6-1, 6-0 over H. Lee at six.
"I thought Kewa played really well today," said Borelli. "She is really starting to hit the ball after dealing with injuries throughout the fall season."
Next on the slate for the Frogs is a home date with UT-Arlington on Thursday. The match, which is the season-opener for the Mavericks, is set to begin at 2 p.m.
