Feb. 5, 2005
Fort Worth, Texas - The No. 19 TCU women's tennis team opened the 2005 dual season by shutting out Texas State, 7-0, at the Bayard H. Freidman Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Frogs dropped only seven games in singles as junior Gloriann Lopez claimed her match at No. 4 singles over Sumarie Muller by the count of 6-0, 6-0.
"I thought our intensity was really strong today," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "Our team just likes to play and we've been really anxious to get things underway. Texas State played well in doubles and we were really hungry in singles. This might be one of the best assembled team of competitors TCU has ever had."
The Frogs came out competing in doubles as sophomore Ana Cetnik and senior Story Tweedie-Yates picked up the first victory on the day in the No.1 doubles spot for the Horned Frogs. Cetnik and Tweedie-Yates, who were competing for the first time together as a team, dominated their match as they won 8-1 over Melanie Hall and Tima Klemenc.
Lopez and freshman Kewa Nichols clinched the doubles point for TCU. Playing in the No. 3 spot, the pair picked up an 8-3 victory over Natalie McLeod and Leja Sirola. Senior Paige Brown and freshman Andrea Morgado, who had a team-best 9-4 record in the fall, won their match over Jana Cucciniello and Sumarie Muller 8-5.
Tweedie-Yates, who is the 14th ranked player in the ITA rankings, won a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Sirola. No. 25 Helena Besovic clinched the match with her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Cucciniello in the No. 2 singles. Cetnik, Morgado and Nichols lost a total of four games in their three victories.
The Frogs (1-0) are now 5-0 all-time against the Bobcats (0-3). TCU will return to the courts on Wednesday afternoon when North Texas comes to Fort Worth for a 2 p.m. match.
