TCU Comes Up Short to Purdue
Feb. 1, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas (February 1, 2014) – The No. 25 TCU women’s tennis team fell just short to No. 30 Purdue and were defeated 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Horned Frogs (3-3, 0-0 Big 12) battled through injuries and took the doubles point against the Boilermakers (2-1, 0-0 Big 10), but ultimately could not hold onto the lead and fell in the match.
“We were without Simona (Parajova) today at the No. 2 position and Stefanie (Tan) was just returning. We need them healthy for our team to be successful,” coach Dave Borelli said. “Mimi (Fotopoulos) and Sofiko (Kadzhaya) played really well today. This match will make our team tougher. This is a great opportunity for our younger players to get better in matches.”
After suffering injuries the day before against DePaul, TCU got off to a great start against Purdue as Stefanie Tan returned to the lineup on the No. 3 court with Monika Sirilova to win 6-3 over Nicole Robinson and Natalia Davila. TCU completed the doubles point as Millie Nichols and Seda Arantekin posted a win at the No. 1 position with a 6-4 victory over Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany.
The Boilermakers got their first point of the match with a win at the No. 3 spot as Daniela Vidal took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nichols. Sofiko Kadzhaya lost a tough battle on court four and fell in a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 decision as Purdue went up 2-1 in the match. The Boilermakers found their last two wins on courts five and six to seal the win.
TCU’s biggest win of the day came at the No. 2 position, as Mimi Fotopoulos picked up her first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-3, 6-3 downing of No. 110 Mara Schmidt.
TCU wraps up its weekend trip with a match against the Illinois Illini (3-0, 0-0 Big 10) in Urbana, Ill., on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.
