Women's Tennis Team Opens Spring with Shutout
Jan. 24, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team (1-0, 1-0 C-USA) opened its spring season and the Dave Borelli era with a convincing 7-0 victory over Conference USA opponent Saint Louis (0-1, 0-1 C-USA) on Friday. Due to cold weather, the match was played at the indoor courts of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Frogs picked up an 8-3 win from the No. 2 doubles pair of junior Saber Pierce and new partner freshman Iris Jaklin over Sandra Simunic and Amy O'Handley. The 30th-ranked duo of senior Rosa Perez and junior Paty Aburto, TCU's No. 1 pair, earned a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Melisa Lemus and Vicki Zielinski. The No. 3 team of sophomores Ivonne Andrade and Karla Mancinas also captured a 9-7 win, this one against Melissa Cutler and Erin Kersten. On the singles side, all of the Frogs won in straight sets. Seeing action as a Horned Frog for the first time were freshmen Jaklin and Gloriann Lopez. Complete results of the match can be found below. Next Saturday, the Frogs will host in-state C-USA opponent Houston. The match will begin at noon and will be played off-campus at Colonial Country Club.
