Women's Swimming and Diving Sweeps Cincinnati and Louisville; Men Split

Nov. 2, 2002

Morning Results | Afternoon Results

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - TCU's swimming and diving squads closed out a weekend trip on the banks of the Ohio River by capturing six-of-eight dual meet titles versus Conference USA-foes Cincinnati and Louisville Saturday at the Mary Meagher Aquatic Center. Highlighting the successful performances was the women's squad's 4-0 sweep of its meets, including back-to-back wins over defending conference champion Cincinnati.

In the meets' morning session, the Lady Frogs (5-1) posted a 43-42 comeback win over the UC while drubbing U of L 48-29. Trailing the Bearcats by 15 points heading into the final two events, the Frogs' 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Erin Irons (Midland, Texas/Midland), Aimee Moreau (Kenner, La./St. Martin's Episcopal), Katie Schell (Elkhart, Ind./Canyon Del Oro/Indian River C.C.) and Lisa Champ (Canby, Ore./Canby) claimed victory in 3:34.51 to get TCU back within striking distance. Led by freshman Kelly Seely's (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook) 253.35 tally in three-meter diving, the Horned Frogs placed three divers to Cincinnati's zero to end the meet and claim the one-point triumph.

On the men's side in the morning, the Frogs were not able to overcome a determined Cincinnati squad, falling to the Bearcats 53-32, but knocked off Louisville 55-32. Sophomore Craig Chapman (San Antonio, Texas/Robert E. Lee) posted TCU's lone individual victory of the morning, claiming the 200-yard backstroke title in 1:54.49.

Both afternoon tilts with Cincinnati came down to the last event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Frogs' team of Irons, Andrea Stevens (Enid, Okla./Enid), Schell and freshman Leann Cathcart (Henderson, N.C./Longview, Texas) won the race in 1:37.10 to seal a 43-33 win over the Bearcats.

However, the TCU men (3-2) again came up just short against UC, dropping the 200 free relay and the meet to the Bearcats by a score of 40-36. TCU's afternoon effort on the men's side was highlighted by freshman diver Kelly McCain (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll), who won the one-meter event and qualified for the NCAA Zone D meet with a 292.20.

Both TCU squads made it a weekend sweep of six meets with Louisville by beating the Cardinals 43-23 on the women's side and 42-25 on the men's.

"Today was a great day for our team, especially on the women's side," TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. "Beating the defending conference champs makes a statement for our women, while the men rebounded from a tough morning to take a very determined and talented Cincinnati squad right down to the wire."

The TCU women will return to action when they visit Metroplex-rival North Texas Thursday night at 7 p.m. The men host Air Force on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Wilkerson Greines Pool in Fort Worth.
