Men Lead C-USA Invitational, Women in Third of League Championships After Day One

INDIANAPOLIS - Sparked by a school record-breaking victory in the opening race, defending champion TCU men's swimming and diving team opened up a big lead after day one of the Conference USA Men's Invitational. The TCU women notched a pair of school-record wins, but suffered a costly disqualification in the day's final relay and sit in third after day one of the C-USA Championships. The TCU men lead the C-USA Invite with 293 points, 78 ahead of second-place East Carolina. The ECU women lead the C-USA Championships, five points in front of second-place Cincinnati. The TCU women sit in third with 142 points. The Horned Frogs' only victory of the day on the men's side was a big one, as the 200 freestyle relay squad of Aaron Ewert (Dallas, Texas/Garland), Jeff Parkinson (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill), David Tietze ( Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) and Dana Kizer (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) opened the meet by winning the event in 1:21.38, setting a school record in the process. The previous school record of 1:21.78 was set by Brent Hendrix, Ted Murphy, Adrian Velasquez and Mischa Sommerville in 1997. The Lady Frogs also claimed victory and a school record in the 200 free relay. The squad of Leann Cathcart (Henderson, N.C./Longview, Texas), Erin Irons (Midland, Texas/Midland), Andrea Stevens (Enid, Okla./Enid) and Katie Schell (Elkhart, Ind./Canyon Del Oro) took the league title in 1:35.04, breaking the 1988 school record of Cindy McClure, Lori Myers, Cathy Boyd and Katie Tredennick by one-hundredth of a second. Irons continued her successful day when she won the 50-yard freestyle in :23.28. The mark broke Tredennick's TCU record of :23.36, set in 1990, and was the first individual league title of Irons' career. The time was also good for an NCAA B-cut for Irons.
