Scouting TCU The Horned Frogs played in front of 1,134 fans last Friday night. On offense, Karoly led TCU with two goals and one assist, while sophomore Jackie Torda recorded two assists. Calhoun set a new TCU record under Abdalla in the match becoming the first freshman to net two goals in her debut, while Nikki Wilbur notched only her second goal of her career in a Horned Frog uniform. TCU is currently ranked No. 15 in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz magazine, while both Karoly and Walters were honored as the Mountain West Conference Offensive and Defensive Player's of the Week following the opening-season victory.
Scouting Ole Miss Ole Miss welcomes back nine starters from last year's team that went 7-8-5 and finished third in the Southeastern Conference Western Division, despite not losing a match to a division foe for the third straight season. Among the returnees are All-SEC selections Amy Bayles, Jennifer Hance and junior defender Danielle Johnson. Hance netted the Rebels lone goal against Western Kentucky off an assist by Christine Breaux.
Scouting Xavier Overall, Xavier went 4-14-1 overall and 3-7-1 in conference action in 2007. The Musketeers are coached by Alvin Alexander who is in his fourth year as head coach in Cincinnati. Over the spring, XU compiled a 2-2-3 record, including a 2-1 loss to perennial national power Notre Dame on April 27. Alexander was Notre Dame's top assistant when the Fighting Irish won the National Championship in 2004. He is no stranger to the state of Texas as he was the men's soccer coach at the University of Texas at Permian Basin for two years, while also overseeing the North Texas and Midland Olympic Development Programs. The Musketeers return most of their scoring punch as both Melissa Zimmerman and Brittany Green are back this fall.
Series Records The Horned Frogs and Rebels have faced off once before. In 2001, TCU fell to Ole Miss in Birmingham, Ala., 2-0. Ole Miss finished the game with 13 shots, while TCU tallied seven shots at the UAB Nike Classic. For the match, TCU goalkeeper Shannon Wagner recorded three saves, while Jeanine Rogers connected on two shots.
In the Rankings Overall, the TCU women round out the women's top 15 at No. 15, led by junior Lizzy Karoly and freshman Jordan Calhoun, who both posted two goals last weekend. The central region consists of 69 teams.
Karoly and Walters Honored By Conference Karoly, a native of Escondido, Calif., netted two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over 2007 NCAA qualifier Stephen F. Austin this past weekend. Overall, the returning all-conference performer led the MWC in points and became the first Horned Frog under head coach Dan Abdalla to score two goals in a season opener. Walters, an Oklahoma City, Okla., native, shut out Stephen F. Austin in a 5-0 win. She played all 90 minutes against the 2007 NCAA Tournament participant and made six saves, while posting the fourth shutout of her career.
A Fast Start For The Frogs
A Monumental Win
Last Time Out Karoly, a junior from Escondido, Calif., put TCU on the board five minutes into the match off an assist from Jackie Torda. Karoly split two Ladyjack defenders and drilled a shot into the back of the net past SFA's Crystin Pactor. In the 11th minute of the match, freshman Jordan Calhoun increased the Horned Frog's lead, netting a goal off an assist from Torda. Right before the half, Calhoun connected on her second goal of the night, this time off an assist from senior midfielder Caroline Starns. Following Karoly's second goal in the 84th minute, sophomore Nikki Wilbur put a punctuation mark on the night, booming a goal past Pactor off a corner kick by Karoly. TCU goalkeeper Kelsey Walters was solid all night as she saved six shots, while Pactor, who faced pressure for nearly the entire match from an aggressive TCU offense, recorded six saves.
