TCU drops exhibition match to No. 23 Cowgirls
Aug. 16, 2008
STILLWATER, Okla. - Chelsea Cody netted a goal in the first half, but it wasn't enough as TCU dropped a 3-1 exhibition match to No. 23 Oklahoma State Saturday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
"I think we did some very good things and found out some things we need to work on," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "Really, we answered a lot of the questions we had and we answered them against a top 25 team, so that's good." Following an OSU goal by Siera Stawser, Cody, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, put TCU on the board from about 25 yards out late in the first half, knotting the score at 1-1. Sophomore Nikki Wilbur looked to break the tie right before the half, but missed on a header inside the box. Despite heavy pressure from the Horned Frog defense, the Cowgirls broke the tie midway through the second period when Annika Niemeier beat the outstretched arms of Kelsey Walters. Later in the half, Lizzy Karoly just missed finding the back of the net off a free kick in the 65th minute. Oklahoma State's Kyndall Treadwell added an insurance goal late in the match to increase the score to 3-1. Following Treadwell's goal, Kaylie Garcia, an Oklahoma City, Okla., native, tried to connect from 30 yards out in the 71st minute, but had her shot saved by OSU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gustaves. Late in the second half, Karoly broke behind the Oklahoma State defense off a pass from senior Caroline Starns, but was called for offsides. Two minutes later, Jackie Torda, who led TCU in goals scored last fall, tried to split the posts but watched as her shot sailed high. For the match, TCU posted 10 shots, including six in the second half. Karoly led TCU on offense with four shots, while Garcia posted two shots on Saturday night. On defense, Walters recorded three saves, including one in the first half where she came out of the box to block a blistering shot from OSU's Kasey Langdon. The Cowgirls' Erin Stigler and Gustaves combined to stop two shots.
TCU will open regular season action next week at home against Stephen F. Austin. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
