Feb. 4, 2008

TCU head coach Dan Abdalla sat down with GoFrogs.com this week and gave fans an inside look into one of his player's battle with cancer.

This is the fifth installment of Coach Abdalla's weekly journal as the Horned Frogs will open the spring season in February.

Fifth Installment

I got a chance to go to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo last week and I really think that that is one of the unique things about Fort Worth. It was a lot of fun and truly shows the mystique of Fort Worth.

Training has been great. It was a lot of fun to watch the kids get out and play last week. You can really tell they miss it. It is nice to hear the girls start to use the words National Championship on a regular basis. It's great to see that it has become their expectations for the program. It is one thing for the coaches to want it and believe in it, but it is another for the kids to buy into it. Words are just words, but you can really start to see that they are definitely striving to reach that goal.

Probably one of the biggest things with this group of kids is seeing how they have dealt with things off the field this winter. The one that stands out the most is Lizzie Batten. She is a kid that I just have the utmost respect for. Last summer, she got diagnosed with cancer and had to go to chemotherapy, but someway battled her way back to play a significant amount for us last fall. She is such a special kid. Unfortunately, this winter she had another scare so she had to take some time off from her training. It ended up not being cancer, but again the girl's character really showed. To be honest with you, all she cared about was that she could not do her fitness and that really shows the character of her as an individual, especially since she is dealing with something that is a lot larger then soccer.

It is good for our team to see how she handles that situation. She is truly a team-oriented person and truly shows the type of character and commitment we have on this team.
