Frogs Magical Run Comes To An End
Nov. 4, 2012
SAN ANTONIO - A pair of goals 22 seconds apart by the Baylor Bears broke open a close game and the Bears handed TCU a 4-1 loss in the Big 12 Championship match. Vittoria Arnold was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament
"I'm really proud of our group," said head coach Eric Bell. "We were beat up and these guys played their butts off for 90 minutes and did everything they could to get a result. Unfortunately Baylor was better than us today so congratulations to Baylor for doing a tremendous job throughout the season and the tournament. We'll be back and we'll win a few of these, trust me."
Trailing 2-0 late in the second half, the Horned Frogs made a strong push as it controlled the ball for a majority of the time. The Frogs earned a trio of corner kicks but couldn't get any pressure on the ball.
All the hard work, though, paid off in the 76th minute as TCU cut the Baylor lead in half. Alvarado made a good run down the far side and worked the ball into space. She beat her defender and set a crossing shot across the six yard box. The feed was right to the head of Lindsy Schafer, who buried it in the back of the net.
Baylor responded just six minutes later as it potted a pair of goals in a 22 second span. Hanna Gilmore buried a long shot in the upper right corner to push the lead back to two, 3-1. Larissa Campos followed suit just seconds later as she took a feed from Gilmore to make it 4-1.
The Bears opened the second half scoring in the 54th minute on a Gilmore goal. Katie Daigle took a corner kick that created havoc in the six yard box. Larsen initially took two shots that were blocked by TCU defenders, but the Frogs couldn't corral the third shot as Gilmore netted the goal for a 2-0 Baylor lead.
Baylor had numerous opportunities in the early as it fired off two shots in the first five minutes of the match. None was better than the opportunity for Gilmore in the fifth minute as she took a feed from Dana Larsen and was in alone on goal. Her wide-open shot went high over the goal.
Two minutes after Kat Ludlow hit the crossbar, the Bears finally hit paydirt. Lisa Sliwinski fed the ball across to Larsen, who hit Selby Polley with a perfect pass and Polley found the far right corner to put Baylor up 1-0.
Arnold came up huge just minutes after the goal as she made back-to-back point blank saves to keep it a 1-0 match.
The Frogs best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 38th minute. Sarah Schweiss found herself with running room and she carried the ball into the attacking zone. Running step-for-step with her down the far side was Madeline Hamm. Schweiss fed the ball to the open space in front of Hamm and she carried the ball into the penalty box. Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss came out to challenge and Hamm blasted the ball off of Kloss to set up a corner. Alvarado's header on the ensuing corner was just wide of the target.
TCU's season comes to an end with the loss. The Frogs finish up their inaugural season under Bell with a 7-10-4 record and its first-ever appearance in a conference tournament championship match.
