TCU Soccer Can't Solve San Diego State Friday
Oct. 7, 2011
San Diego State 4, TCU 0
"Overall, we didn't have a bad performance, but when you gift a good team goals, it's going to bite you," TCU head coach Dan Abdalla. "We've got to be more battle-hearty and willing to fight. We've got to be willing to get after things and compete. That's the challenge for us. If we get that straight, we're in good shape, but it's going to take the whole group coming together." The Horned Frogs rattled off 15 shots on the night, landing four attempts on goal. Senior Jordan Calhoun led the charge with five strikes of her own, while freshmen Natalie Werner and Tori Hale tallied two shots apiece. The Frogs had several scoring opportunities in the first half after the Aztecs took an early lead. Calhoun sent a nice cross into Hale at the top-right side of the box and the Abilene, Texas native blasted a strike on target, but SDSU's goalkeeper made a diving save. Minutes later, Calhoun had a nice look on a free kick from the top of the box, but her shot just grazed over the crossbar. Just before half time, senior Alex Mechalske dribbled the ball into the left corner to send a swooping cross on goal, but a pair of Frogs failed to land a shot on goal. TCU came out aggressive in the second half, looking for a quick score to get back into the match. Calhoun started the attack with a blast, but an Aztec defender slid in to get a foot on it to block it away. With the ball still on SDSU's side of the field, Hale launched a shot towards the goal, but her attempt was also thwarted by a block before reaching the goal. The Frogs would later earn a corner kick in the 71st minute. Senior Kaylie Garcia fluttered a high set into the box, over the head of incoming senior Katie Taylor, and bounced through the box without being touched. Garcia had another shot at a corner set minutes later, but Calhoun's blast from the top of the box sailed over the goal. Taylor had a chance to put TCU on the board in the 82nd minute, but her free kick attempt was knocked down by a wall of Aztecs inside of the box. Keeping possession, the Frogs pushed the ball back into a crowded box to have junior Monica Alvarado's header turned away and junior Shelby Campbell knock the rebound wide right.
TCU will bounce back to host Texas Tech Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
