Boston University shuts out Frogs in Tournament Opener, 1-0
Sept. 9, 2005
FORT WORTH, Texas - Boston University tallied a goal in the middle of the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory over TCU at the TCU Horned Frog Invitational. Outstanding play by Katy Buchanan in goal kept the Frogs in the match until the end. Buchanan stopped eight shots. TCU outshot the Terries 6-4 in the second half. Boston pushed hard out of the gate looking for the early lead. TCU withstood the early pressure as the Terriers took five shots in the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Frogs forced the Terriers into taking wide shots, but struggled to get the ball into their offensive zone. Despite being outshot early in the half, the Frogs had a great opportunity to take the early 1-0 lead. Lauren Pope found herself deep in the penalty area and blasted the shot towards the goal where Christina Reuter was positioned to make the save. In the 29th minute, Boston got the lead they had been pushing for when a failed clear attempt by Buchanan found its way to Marisha Schumacher-Hodge. She headed the ball back to the top of the penalty box and right to the foot of Meghann Cook, who took the low shot. The Frogs fired off four shots to the Terriers 18 in the half, but could not get the tying goal. Buchanan made five stops in the half. In the second half, the Frogs picked up the tempo, pushing for the tying goal. They limited the Terriers to just four shots and Buchanan made the only three stops she needed to keep the Frogs in the match. She made two diving stops in the half on point-blank shots from the Terrier offense. The Frogs best opportunity of the second half came in the 80th minute. TCU pushed the ball deep in the offensive zone as Caroline Starns dribbled down from midfield. She got tied up with a defender and pushed the ball out to Kim Thompson, who took the quick shot that just missed going in the upper left corner. A Frog corner kick in the last minute of play was headed out of danger.
The Frogs fall to 2-3 on the season. They will be back in action on Sunday afternoon to close out the Horned Frog Invitational. Baylor and Boston will square off in the early match at 1 p.m. with the Frogs and Northwestern hitting the field 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first match. In earlier action, Baylor University picked up its second win of the season with a 7-1 win over Northwestern State (La.). Anna Schuch recorded a hat trick for the Bears and Ashley Holder made five saves in the win. Juliana Zavala scored the lone goal for the Demons. |
