TCU blanks Tulsa, 2-0
Sept. 1, 2006
TULSA, Okla. - The TCU soccer team earned its first victory of the young season on Friday night as the Horned Frogs blanked Tulsa, 2-0, on Friday at the TU Women's Soccer/Grover Classic held at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
TCU (1-2-0) was able to control the tempo of the game for most of the match with crisp passing and good spacing. The Horned Frogs outshot Tulsa (2-2-0), 16-8, tallying nine shots on goal compared to only three by the Golden Hurricane. TCU's defense did not surrender a shot on goal in the second half.
Michelle Nguyen was able to get the Horned Frogs on the board first, as the Richardson, Texas, native beat her defender and drilled a shot past Tulsa goalkeeper Meredith Hart from 20 yards out. Nguyen's goal came at the 22:08 mark, and was the Horned Frogs' first goal of the season.
The Horned Frogs had an ample opportunity to go ahead 2-0 at the 41:09 mark off an indirect kick by Nguyen. Nguyen crossed the ball which tipped off Hart's fingers and skipped through the box before any Horned Frogs could make a play on it.
In the second half, TCU was able to strike again with 17:05 to play, as Nguyen played a corner kick to the middle of the box that was headed into the back of the net by Karissa Hill. The goal was Hill's third of her career and pushed TCU's lead to 2-0.
Sticking to the gameplan used in every game this year, head coach Dan Abdalla evenly split the time in goal between Katy Buchanan and Kelsey Vross. Buchanan started the game in goal for the Frogs, tallying three saves. Vross took over in goal for TCU in the second half. The start for Buchanan was her second of the season and 35th of her career.
Buchanan earned the win in goal, moving to 1-1 on the year.
TCU continues play at the TU Women's Soccer/Grover Classic on Sunday against Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m. The match will also be played at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
