Aug. 29, 2004
Lubbock, Texas -
The TCU Horned Frogs picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 2-0, Sunday afternoon. Amy Van Zandt connected twice in the win to propel the Frogs to victory and Ashley Pierret made two stops in her collegiate debut.
The Frogs were offensive minded from the get-go as they came out shooting. TCU had plenty of chances in the half to jump out to the early lead as they took five quality shots, four of which were on goal. Just a minute into the game, Karissa Hill took a shot on a direct kick that just went high. Thirty minutes later Jessi Moore fed a pass to a wide-open Ginny Hubbard. Hubbard took the shot, but Tech goalkeeper Megan Knauss was there for the stop.
TCU finally hit paydirt in the 27th minute as Van Zandt connected for the Frogs first goal of the season. Van Zandt got the ball at midfield on a breakaway. Her defender caught her from behind, but Van Zandt was able to recover as she buried the shot high over the keeper's shoulder for a 1-0 lead.
The Frogs dodged a bullet at the end of the half as the Raiders made a late charge for the equalizer. Kim Cypert was alone on the right side, but lost control of the ball as she shanked it off the outside of her foot and wide.
In the second half, the Frogs were pushing for the insurance goal, but Tech was pushing just as hard for the tying goal. The Red Raiders had seven corners in the half, but failed to capitalize on any of them.
The Frogs finally got the two-goal lead as they capitalized on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Jennifer Vasquez knocked Van Zandt down from behind in the penalty box, setting up the PK. Van Zandt took the shot low and to the right of the goalkeeper as Tina Rincon never even moved on the shot.
TCU dodged a bullet with 11 minutes left as Tech got a corner kick. A Raider head knocked the ball toward the goal but Kelly Potysman was there to head it out of danger.
The Frogs suffered a blow with seven minutes to go as Pierret came out to challenge a shot, but was taken down. Laura Greenberg saved the ball from going in the net as she cleared it away. Katie Buchanan came in to relieve Pierret and made one save to preserve the shutout.
Texas Tech out shot the Frogs 13-11, but TCU won the battle of shots on goal as they forced Tech goalkeepers to make seven saves in the game.
The Horned Frogs will remain on the road as they head to Norman, Okla. for a match-up against their second Big 12 opponent of the season. The Frogs and the Sooners will kick things off at 7:30 at the OU Soccer Complex.
