TCU Soccer Can't Solve San Diego State Friday

The Frogs will bounce back to take on Texas Tech Sunday at 7 p.m.

On March 9, 2005, the face of the TCU women's soccer team changed for the first time in the program's history. Dan Abdalla was hired as the second coach in the team's 19 years of existence. TCU announced the resignation of Abdalla on Nov. 3, 2011 after his seventh year in Fort Worth. Abdalla had a record of 57-65-9 at TCU and has a 111-103-17 overall mark.

The Horned Frogs went 7-11-1 in his final year on the TCU sidelines, advancing to the Mountain West Championships for the fifth time under Abdalla's watch. Senior forward Jordan Calhoun was honored with second-team All-MW accolades, collecting seven goals and a pair of assists. With guidance from Abdalla, Calhoun became the program's all-time leader in goals (36) and points (85). TCU hosted four matches on national television in 2011.

TCU finished the 2011 season ranked second in the MW in attendance, averaging 1,731 fans per contest. A total of 15,583 fans rolled through the turnstiles of Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium for nine games in the fall. TCU enjoyed the top two attended matches in Garvey-Rosenthal history in 2011, hosting 2,431 for the Texas Tech match on Oct. 9 and 2,803 for Air Force on Oct. 14.

TCU went 7-10-2 in 2010 as junior Jordan Calhoun collected first-team All-Mountain West Conference accolades. Calhoun knocked in six goals, while also dishing out three assists during the year. With those numbers, she became TCU's all-time leader in goals scored with 29 career goals and also moved into second all-time in points for a career with 69 points. Calhoun joined senior Jackie Torda on the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District squad. The Frogs earned their fifth-consecutive Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA).

Abdalla guided TCU to nine victories and a third-straight post-season tournament appearance in 2009. The Horned Frogs qualified for the Mountain West Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed after defeating UNLV, 3-2, in overtime to close the year. During the year, Abdalla's Frogs climbed as high as No. 26 in the NSCAA national polls, while also jumping to No. 4 in the Pacific Region during the course of 2009. Overall, Abdalla helped Torda become a national finalist for the Soccer News Net National Player of the Year award, which made her one of the top 38 players in the country for the 2009 season. The honor for Torda marked the second-consecutive season in which Abdalla has had a player up for the national honor. Torda also was named to the all-conference squad, which marked the third-straight season in which Abdalla has placed a player on the all-conference team.

In 2008, Abdalla led TCU to a national ranking in every national poll during the season, including a program-high RPI ranking of No. 24. TCU posted a program-best overall record of 14-4-2 in route to a semifinal appearance in the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Purple and White also placed three players on the all-conference squad, including first-team selection and MWC Freshman of the Year Jordan Calhoun. Under Abdalla's tutelage, Calhoun was named a second-team freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz Magazine, while also being named one of the 32 best players in the country by Soccer News Net. The Horned Frogs under Abdalla in 2008 broke nearly every school record and finished the year with an overall conference record of 4-2-1.

Abdalla's Horned Frogs shutout a top-25 ranked opponent, appeared on national television for the first time in program history, finished with the most wins overall and in conference play under Abdalla and placed two players on the all-conference squad for the first time in Mountain West play in 2007. The Horned Frogs also competed in post-season play for the second time in three years by squaring off against BYU in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament on Nov. 7.

In 2006, Abdalla led the Horned Frogs to a 6-8-4 record overall and 1-3-3 mark in the Mountain West Conference. On the year, TCU had three players receive Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors and one player selected to Soccer Buzz Magazine's All-Freshman Central Regional Team.

In his first season as head coach of the Horned Frogs, Abdalla led TCU to its first appearance in the postseason tournament since the 2003 campaign. During his tenure, one player earned second-team all-Mountain West accolades and another was honored as Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He finished the season with a 6-11-0 record and a seventh-place finish in conference play, TCU's first in the Mountain West.

Abdalla posted an overall record of 54-38-8, for a .580 winning percentage, in his five seasons as the head of the UNLV program. He recorded at least a .500 record in each of his five campaigns despite taking over a program that had been in existence for just two years prior to his arrival.

A dozen Rebels earned all-conference distinction under Abdalla and he mentored the school's only WUSA draft pick. He served as an assistant coach at UNLV for one season before assuming the head coaching duties prior to the start of spring practice in 2000.

During his tenure at UNLV, Abdalla's squads consistently showed improvement. In his debut as a Division I head coach during the 2000 season, the Rebels posted an 11-9 overall record, including a 7-1 mark at home, their best season record since the program's inception in 1998. Abdalla posted his first collegiate coaching victory on Aug. 25, 2000 with a 3-1 triumph over Cal State Fullerton.

In 2001, the Rebels won a school record 12 victories, reaching the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game for the first time in school history. His 2002 squad reached double figures in wins for the third straight year. In 2003, the Rebels finished with a 9-9-3 record. In addition, Abdalla helped Annii Magliulo become the first Rebel to earn all-region honors.

In his final season at UNLV, the Rebels claimed their first Mountain West Conference regular season title with a league mark of 5-1 and were selected as an at-large team to their first NCAA Tournament. All this came after being picked to finish fourth in the pre-season coaches' poll. The Rebels lost a 1-0 double overtime decision to 21st-ranked San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to finish the season with a 12-5-2 overall record. The 12 wins matched the school record set in 2001 under Abdalla's direction. Three UNLV players were named to the first-team all-conference squad and were members of the Soccer Buzz all-West Region team, led by league Offensive Player of the Year Annii Magliulo. In addition, Abdalla was named the MWC Coach of the Year and was the runner-up for Regional Coach of the Year honors.

A four-year letterwinner and starting goalkeeper for the UNLV men's soccer team from 1994-97, Abdalla set a pair of school records during his playing career. He registered 321 saves and nine shutouts over 68 games for an impressive 1.95 goals against average and logged a school-record 101 saves in a season.

Abdalla returned to his alma mater in 1999 after a two-year professional stint with the Orange County Zodiac of the A League, an affiliate of Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Mission Viejo, Calif., native is a 1997 graduate of UNLV, earning a bachelor's degree in communications. He and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Fort Worth with their son, Zakary and daughter, Kloe.
