Wood Boosts Women's Golf Into Sixth Place At Mercedes-benz
KNOXVILLE, TENN. (October 16, 2000) -- Led by freshman Courtney Wood's
strong play throughout the weekend, the TCU women's golf team took sixth
place out of 15 teams at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate
Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Wood's final-round score of 74 lifted her into a tie for 12th place for the tournament. Her three-round score of 227 (11-over-par) was 12 strokes off the pace set by medalist Viranda Nirapathpongporn of Duke and just six strokes out of third place. It was her first career top 20 finish in just her second collegiate tournament. Fellow freshman Brooke Tull had the second-best finish for the Frogs, as she wound up just outside of the top 20, in a tie for 21st overall. Tull was consistent in her play, shooting rounds of 77, 78 and 76 on consecutive days for a total of 231. Sophomore Shannon Barr (233) made a charge on the final day, shooting an even-par 72, which was the best individual round by a Horned Frog golfer. She shot an incredible five-under-par 31 on the back nine. In addition to moving herself into a tie in the 27th position individually, her score helped TCU net a collective 302 for the final round, their best team score of the three-day tournament. Senior Brenda Anderson (237), who finished 40th, and junior Amy Sands (244), who landed in a tie for 52nd, completed the Horned Frogs roster. Anderson's best round was a 78 on the second day, while Sands carded a 79 in the first round. "I was very pleased with the last day," head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin said. "We made some mental mistakes in the first two rounds, but we talked about them before Sunday's final round and it helped. They learned a lot and got a good taste of what we can do. I hope we can keep building on this and can win one of our next two tournaments." Second-ranked Duke outlasted the field with a 26-over-par 890, 10 strokes ahead of fourth-ranked Tennessee (900). Of the 15 teams, seven were ranked in the most recent MasterCard Top 25 poll, including 19th-rated TCU. TEAM TOTALS: 1. Duke (300-297-293=890); 2. Tennessee (302-297-301=900); 3.
