Derrey has strong opening round for TCU women's golf

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Valentine Derrey shot an opening round 1-over-par 74 as the No. 21 TCU women's golf team began play Monday at the Margaret Branch NCAA Preview at the University of New Mexico Championship Course. In their first tournament of the 2007-08 campaign, the Horned Frogs are in 17th place after carding a 13-over 305. Duke leads the field by four strokes with a 5-under 287. UCLA and USC shot a 291 and 292, respectively. Derrey, a sophomore from Paris, France, is tied for 24th individually. She is seven strokes behind Pepperdine's Taylore Karle who shot a 67. Sophomore Megan O'Donnell had a 76 for TCU while senior Carrie Morris posted a 78. Christina Schams and Allyson Ferguson, playing in their first tournaments for the Frogs, carded a 77 and 78, respectively. Schams, from Chandler, Ariz., is a sophomore transfer from the University of Nevada. Ferguson is a freshman from Houston. Tournament play continues Tuesday with the final round slated for Wednesday.
