No. 33 TCU Holds on to Second Place After Round One of "Mo"Morial
Feb. 28, 2005
BRYAN, Texas - After the first round of the Texas A&M "Mo"Morial, No. 33 TCU eeked out a second place finish, five strokes from the No. 43 Aggie leaders and one stroke ahead of No. 30 Baylor and UTEP. Sophomores Camille Blackerby and Elin Emanuelsson each share a piece of seventh place with one round to go today and the final 18 tomorrow.
Blackerby carded a five-over-par 77 in the first round, escaping the dreaded double-bogey that plagued her teammates. Emanuelsson also shot a five-over 77 for her first round. The only Frog other than Blackerby to not double-bogey, the Swede fired an even par on her back nine to keep her in the mix following five bogied holes on the front nine.
Sophomore Catherine Matranga had a tough first round, as she logged a nine-over-par 81 following double-bogeys on her second, fourth, and final holes. She caught her stride in the middle of the round, carding even par on seven straight holes before a bogey-double-bogey final two holes.
Sophomore Stacey Bieber also churned out a nine-over par 81 after round one. Her back nine went more smoothly than the front, as she carded four even-par holes and a birdie, aside from a double-bogey in both the front and the back.
The two-day tournament, Feb. 28 and March 1, at Traditions Golf Club (par-72, 6,386 yards) features a 15-team field, including No. 26 SMU, No. 30 Baylor, No. 33 Kent State, No. 46 Northwestern, and the hosts, No. 43 Texas A&M.
