Derrey ties for individual title at Lady Puerto Rico Classic
Feb. 25, 2007
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- TCU freshman Valentine Derrey finished in a five-way tie for first while the Horned Frogs tied for sixth after Sunday's final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. There was no tiebreaker, so Derrey shared medalist honors with Alina Lee (Georgia), Jenny Suh (Alabama), Pernilla Lindberg (Oklahoma State) and Mariana Macias (Auburn). Derrey is the first TCU freshman to win a tournament since Angela Stanford captured 1997's Texas A&M Monica Welsh Memorial. A native of Paris, France, Derrey was playing in just her second collegiate tournament. It's the second individual title for a Frog this season. Catherine Matranga won the Dick McGuire Invitational in September. Derrey shot a final round 4-over-par 76 to finish with a 1-over 217 for 54 holes. Freshman Megan O'Donnell shot a career-best 74 Sunday for TCU. Matranga placed in a tie for 25th individually, while Camille Blackerby finished in a deadlock for 29th. Auburn won the team title by five shots over Georgia and Oklahoma State. TCU's 893 overall score, 20 strokes behind Auburn, tied Oklahoma for sixth and was one shot behind fifth-place South Carolina. The Frogs return to action March 10 at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invite in Gainesville, Fla. Team Scores TCU Scores
