Feb. 21, 2005
DORADO, Puerto Rico - The Horned Frogs battled against 14-20 mph winds and tough competition to finish a strong second after round one of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Senior D'Rae Ward and sophomore Catherine Matranga carded identical numbers (74, +2) to share a five-way individual tie for third, just three strokes behind California's Sofie Andersson (71, -1). No. 3 Auburn leads the team field with a 299, just five stroke less than the Frogs' 304.
After the first round, the No. 49 Frogs have bested several teams ranked higher in the most recent Golfweek rankings. These teams include No. 5 Georgia, No. 16 Florida, No. 17 Texas, No. 22 Tulsa, No. 21 USC, and No. 18 Wake Forest, among others.
Sophomore Camille Blackerby joins Ward and Matranga in the top ten with her three-over par score of 75. Her mark leaves her locked in a seven-way tie for eighth.
The 72 par, 6,000 yard course will be played in a 54 hole format (18-18-18=54). Last year's individual title went to USC's then-freshman Veronica Felibert of Caracas, Venezuela (213), presently tied for 30th with a seven-over par 79, and the team trophy went to Duke (862), who is not competing in this year's tournament.
